A warm welcome to
J.M. Bray
Getting to know you...Interview

When did you decide to become a writer and why?

It just sort of happened. I’ve worked in public speaking for much of my career and always involved myself in artistic endeavors like playing music, singing, painting, oral story telling. Writing was and is a combination of various aspects of myself.

What inspires you in your writing?

Two things: First comes the “what if” ideas. I let them mull for a good long time before ever putting anything down. If the idea sticks, I figure it’s a good one and start fleshing it out. The second is dreams or the semi-awake dream state. A lot of my story scenes come during those hazy, grey moments.

What genre or genres do you write?

Romantic Fantasy. I have a Historic Romantic Fantasy planned and a time travel one too. But all of them have romantic elements, I can’t help myself.

How many books do you have published and which is your favorite?

I have one: Tearing the Shroud. We should see the second in the Shroud Series Mending the Shroud later this year. I’m currently writing the third, Shrouded. Which is my favorite? All of them, of course.

Who is your favorite author?

Of all time? Eeesh. I couldn’t say. The story/series that pulled me in the deepest was the Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist.

What is your favorite movie and why?

Highlander, the directors cut. Love the concept, the execution, the villain, the dipping into history here and there. I’ve watched it dozens of times.

Where is your favorite place to travel? Where would you like to go?

France. My wife and I love the people, the land, the food, the history, the little tiny roads leading to small villages off the beaten path…all of it. We have Italy on the hit list.

Describe yourself in three words.

Friendly. Caring. Multifaceted.

Do you have a family?

I do…a big one. My wife and I have two grown and married daughters, two grandsons and our parents. Additionally I have seven brother’s and sisters, while she has three. Then you add all their children… I blame it all on my grandmother. When she died at age 81 she had 212 living decendants.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

Keep everything you write. Sometimes it takes a while for the lump of coal to turn into a diamond…even a rough one. If you toss it in the furnace, it never has the chance.
